The cast aluminium end boxes of the charge air cooler have been optimized with the help of flow analyses in the CFD system in order to achieve outstanding cooling performance with minimum back pressure. The connection diameters at the charge air cooler inlet are Ø62 mm and at the charge air cooler outlet Ø67 mm to ensure optimum flow efficiency. The flow path from the filters to the turbo inlets is very direct and does not change direction as abruptly as the usual OEM airbox designs. So instead of a completely new design, we focused on improving the OEM airbox with less restrictive flow and improved temperature efficiency. We developed replacement filters made of non-woven fabric, which have a much higher flow rate compared to the paper filters. To lower air intake temperatures and force air into the airbox, we designed large front vanes that sit behind the grilles. The carbon vanes direct air into the ducts and effectively insulate the intake side of the airbox. The final piece is the carbon airbox lid, which doesn't increase performance, but allows for a more audible intake sound and gives the engine bay a much needed aesthetic improvement. This means that the charge air is not cooled using the ambient air as a cooling medium (as usual), but with the aid of a separate cooling water circuit. A reduction in the cooling water temperature can therefore be directly equated with an improved cooling performance of the charge air. This is precisely where the advantages of the WAGNERTUNING upgrade water coolers come into play. The newly developed competition racing nets of the WAGNERTUNING high-performance water coolers increase the radiator volume of the standard water cooler by 89% for the front and 94% for the side. The ratio between the inner and outer cooling surface generates maximum heat transfer and at the same time allows the adjacent components (e.g. the engine water cooler located behind it) sufficient air flow for heat exchange.
